Assignment 2: LASA 1: Hybrid Car Research PaperHybrid vehicles are vehicles that use both a small internal combustion engine (ICE) and an electric motor to obtain maximum power and fuel economy with low emissions. There are various types of hybrids and each has a different way in which they use the ICE and electric motor with varying success. Sclar (2008) found “what all hybrids have in common is the ability to generate electric current, store it in a large battery, and use that current to help drive the car.”One type of hybrid is the parallel hybrid, this style of hybrid uses both an electric engine and internal combustion engine to operate. Typically the parallel hybrid uses both in tandem or can use one as the primary power source, while the other kicks in to assist when needed. The parallel engine gets its name because both ICE and electric engine are connected to the drive train.The next type is the series hybrid, the series hybrid has either a diesel or gasoline internal combustion engine along with a generator. The generator generates electricity but not for driving the vehicle. Large batteries store electricity that the electric motor uses to propel the vehicle. The third type is a plug-in hybrid. Plug-in hybrids feature large batteries that can be charged at any 110-volt charging station. This allows the plug-in hybrid to drive farther without using the ICE, giving it a range of 100 mpg. Once the charge is depleted, plug-in hybrids will revert back to the standard hybrid mode. The last type of hybrid is the two-mode hybrid. This style of hybrid utilizes two smaller batteries and two electric motors. The transmission has the option to run in a continuously variable transmission mode at low speeds using the electric motors. It can also run at higher speeds using internal combustion engine alone.In the latter paragraphs I will identify the top five most popular choices of hybrid vehicles in today’s market. Car buyers looking to purchase something different than just your typical gas engine vehicle may be interested in a hybrid or an electric car. They both offer great benefits most people may not enjoy on a regular basis. Unfortunately, both vehicles may cost you more than you are willing to spend depending on features. You may save money choosing one over the other, but in order to understand which one would benefit you the most, you may want to compare each vehicle to learn more about them and how they can be a good fit for your lifestyle.
Hybrid cars are known for helping the environment. They are efficient on fuel economy while reducing carbon footprints by keeping the air clean. Such cars are known to give owners better mileage and help fuel usage last a little longer. There are various models available by different car makers and there are electric versions that are made to help give the vehicle more power with the combined usage of gas engines and electric motors. The car is made with a rechargeable battery with the ability to recharge as the car is being driven. The hybrid is a unique innovation with special features such as periodic engine shut off and advanced aerodynamics.
The electric car is also unique as a vehicle that does not use gas, but instead, uses a special battery made with lithium. There is a limited amount of gas that is mixed with coal for additional fuel. There are special places to take your vehicle to be charged, which has been somewhat of a disadvantage for owners. Some mentioned there are not enough of these special charging stations, although more are being made available. Because of the type of battery the car uses it is considered more expensive, but it is quiet when it is on due to no emissions.
Hybrid cars are growing in popularity and seem more adaptable than the electric car. While most consumers are used to using gas as a form of fuel for their vehicle, the electric car has little in flexibility in this area. Many people like the idea of an electric car but some expected the concept to be simpler. Since the hybrid has an electric version some feel this version is easier to maintain and purchase versus the electric car. In time, the electric car may develop more benefits that could give it a better edge over the hybrid.
